13 things I wish I knew before starting Pokemon Pokopia

You're actually a Ditto

This is the big twist that the game reveals early on: your character is actually a Ditto who has transformed into a human. This isn't just a narrative gimmick — it affects gameplay. You can talk to Pokémon directly, understand their needs, and even transform into different Ditto forms later in the game to access special abilities.

Embrace your Ditto nature early. Talking to every Pokémon you meet will reveal habitat hints, crafting recipes, and quest triggers that you'd otherwise miss entirely.

Place Storage Boxes next to your Workbench

This is the single biggest quality-of-life tip in the game. If you place a Storage Box directly adjacent to your Workbench, it will automatically pull crafting materials from the box when you're building items. No more running back and forth between storage and crafting stations.

You can even chain multiple Storage Boxes together near one Workbench to have access to your entire material collection while crafting.

Hold Y to vacuum up items

Instead of picking up items one by one, hold the Y button to inhale multiple items from the ground at once. This is incredibly useful after chopping trees, mining rocks, or clearing debris. It saves an enormous amount of time, especially in resource-heavy areas like the Withered Wasteland.

Recruit up to five Pokémon to follow you

You can have up to five Pokémon following you at any time, and each one has specialties like Burn, Grow, Water, Crush, Hype, or Litter. These specialties are essential for interacting with the environment — Burn lights campfires, Water fills ponds, Crush breaks boulders, and so on.

Plan your party composition before heading out. If you know you'll need to clear rocks and water plants, bring a Crush and Water specialist. It saves constant trips back to swap Pokémon.

Set camera distance to 'Far'

Go into Settings and change your camera distance to 'Far' immediately. The default camera is way too close for comfortable building. The far setting gives you a much better overhead view of your constructions, making it easier to place items precisely and see your habitat layouts.

Inspect sparkles on the ground

Whenever you see sparkles on the ground near objects, inspect them! These are habitat discovery points. Interacting with them reveals new habitat types you can create, and they're the primary way to learn what Pokémon want in their living spaces.

Some sparkles only appear at certain times of day or in specific weather conditions, so revisit areas regularly.

Feed Pokémon to raise comfort levels

Each Pokémon has a comfort level that acts as a happiness meter. Feeding them their preferred foods is one of the fastest ways to raise it. Ask Pokémon directly what they like — they'll give you hints about food preferences, environmental needs, and furniture they want nearby.

Higher comfort levels boost your biome's Environment Level and unlock new interactions, gifts, and even rare crafting recipes from grateful Pokémon.

Build custom houses from ruins

Don't wait for building kits from the shop. You can construct custom houses from scattered ruins found throughout each biome. All you need is 4 walls, a floor piece, and a door. These DIY structures count as proper homes for Pokémon and are much cheaper than buying prefab kits.

Experiment with different wall materials and roof types — each combination affects which Pokémon find the house appealing.

The game uses real-time clock

Pokopia syncs with your Nintendo Switch 2's real-time clock. Different Pokémon appear at different times of day — nocturnal species like Zubat and Hoothoot only come out at night, while others prefer dawn or dusk. Construction timers and crop growth also run in real time.

This means planning your play sessions around certain times can be beneficial. If you're hunting for a specific night-time Pokémon, you'll actually need to play after dark.

Find Magikarp early for the jump ability

Magikarp teaches you the essential jumping ability that completely changes how you navigate terrain. Without it, you're stuck walking around obstacles and taking long detours. Once you befriend Magikarp, you can leap over fences, hop across gaps, and reach elevated areas.

Magikarp can usually be found near any body of water in the Withered Wasteland. Look for splashing animations near rivers and ponds.

Watch the skies for Lugia and Ho-Oh

Legendary Pokémon Lugia and Ho-Oh occasionally fly overhead, casting shadows on the ground below. When you spot their shadows, look up! They drop valuable silver feathers (Lugia) and rainbow feathers (Ho-Oh) that are used in rare crafting recipes.

These flyovers happen randomly but more frequently in areas with high Environment Levels. Keep an eye on the sky while you're building.

Always keep cooked meals on hand

Cooked dishes restore PP (your energy meter) and can temporarily boost specific abilities. Always carry a few meals in your inventory before heading out on resource runs or long exploration trips. Running out of PP means you can't use any tools or interact with Pokémon specialties.

Different recipes offer different buffs — experiment with cooking combinations to find meals that boost the abilities you use most.

Use honey to lure wandering Pokémon home

If a Pokémon has wandered away from its habitat, smear honey on its home to lure it back. Honey is collected from flowers over time (sparkles appear above blooming flowers when honey is ready). This saves you the trouble of tracking down lost Pokémon across the map.

Setting up a dedicated honey farm near your main base is one of the best early-game investments. Plant multiple flower varieties in a row, and you'll have a steady honey supply for luring, cooking, and crafting.
